Medical Students

Background

The Medical Student Teaching Division of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health participates in all four years of JABSOM. The medical school curriculum is centered around Problem-Based Learning, in which the first two years are spent in small group, case-based, integrated basic science learning tutorials rather than in a lecture-based setting. Our faculty serve as small group tutors and clinical skills preceptors in this process. Both full time and community-based faculty serve as primary care preceptors in the summer selective course at the beginning of year two. The required third year clerkship is seven weeks (equal to Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry, and Ob-Gyn) and takes place with community based Family Physicians on Oahu and the neighbor islands. Students commonly select 4th year electives as sub-interns on the residency inpatient service or with community-based preceptors all over Hawai’i and the Pacific Basin. Only our 4th year electives are open to non-JABSOM students.
